Doomsday, also known as Davis Bloome in human form, is a rampaging, seemingly mindless, murdering monster who killed Superman. He is the result of Kryptonian genetic engineering gone awry. In "The Death of Superman" comic storyline in which he first appeared, Doomsday mysteriously bashed his way out of a metallic holding cell miles underground, dug his way up, and began senselessly killing and destroying everything he saw. His motives were initially unknown, but his nature was obvious; He was incredibly powerful, merciless, and seemingly unstoppable. He easily defeated the justice league before confronting Superman.

Doomsday is the only one in main comics continuity to ever kill superman; and he did so simply by beating the man of steel to death. Doomsday was killed in the battle, as well, but later healed himself and returned to life, stronger than before. Superman has encountered him on numerous occasions since.

In the animated universe, Doomsday was a clone, made on Earth; he battled Superman, but never successfully killed him. Also, in All Star Superman, Jimmy Olsen injected himself with Doomsday Serum, temporarily transforming himself into Doomsday to stop Superman.

In Smallville, we meet Doomsday's human form, Davis Bloome, for the first time. He is a Metropolis paramedic who frequently experiences blackouts, during which he transforms into Doomsday. This Doomsday was created by General Zod and Faora. he was a combanation of Kryptonian Monsters only found on Krypton.

Powers

Doomsday has Invulnerability probably greater than that of a normal Kryptonian; as well as Super Strength, Super Speed, and incredible leaping ability.

He also has numerous sharp bony protrusions, which can pierce Kryptonian skin. In Superman/Doomsday: Hunter/Prey, he was shown to be able to shoot these bones at a target, and then reel them back in via some sort of tendin. He can also heal great wounds very quickly.

One of his signature abilities is his regeneration. When he is killed, he comes back to life, resistant to whatever killed him.

Although Doomsday may be a biological Kryptonian, his powers do not seem to stem from the Photonucleic Effect-- that is, they aren't induced by exposure to the yellow sun. His incredible strength and resilience seems to have been "evolved", from Doomsday dying so many times and regenerating.

Super strength - Doomsday is extremely strong, he is stronger than Superman.

Super speed - Doomsday can run faster then the human eye can see. He is not as fast as the Flash, but he is very fast considering his size.

kryptonian sense - Doomsday has the ability to sense anyone kryptonian.

Invulnerability - Doomsday Invulnerability is the same as Superman's, if not greater.

Regeneration - Doomsday can recover from injury very rapidly, with this ability being linked to his reactive adaptation.

Reactive Adaptation – Doomsday develops immunity to any attack that harms him; he cannot be killed the same way twice.

Ability to resurrect himself after death - Doomsday can resurrect himself after death.

Enhanced Underwater Breathing - Doomsday can breathe under water for long periods of time. Doomsday does not need food or water to survive. He also doesn’t need oxygen to survive.

Longevity - Doomsday can live for centuries. Doomsday may possess Immortality.

Healing factor

Super Stamina and Super Endurance

Biology

Doomsday is humanoid, perhaps even human. He was the subject of a genetic experiment on Krypton, but it was stated by Bertron that he was not native of that planet.

He is covered in bony protrusions. Breaking these seems to cause him extreme pain. However, they are extremely difficult to break. (The Death of Superman)

According to Bertron, Doomsday has no internal organs. When sliced open, his insides seem to be some sort of uniform, smooth, metal-like substance. (Superman/Doomsday: Hunter/Prey)

Also, judging by the picture to the right, he doesn't seem to have any visible reproductive organs (Assuming his would be identifiable if he had them). (Doomsday: Year One)

Deaths

Main Article: List of Doomsday's Deaths

Doomsday has died numerous times over the course of his life, each time becoming immune to the previous thing that killed him.

He died many times as a baby at the hands of Bertron, which was the process by which he was first created. He died once to The Radiant, once to Superman, once to the entropy at the end of the universe, once to Imperiex, and so on.

Biography (Comics)

Origins

Thousands of years into Krypton's obscure past, long before the humanoid Kryptonian race managed to gain dominance over the planet, Doomsday was originally an infant humanoid, probably a Kryptonian; he was known at this point simply as baby. An alien scientist known as Bertron saw the environment of his home world. During this time, Krypton was a violent and harsh world equivalent of hell, where only the absolute strongest lifeforms could afford to survive. Because of this, Bertron was influenced to create the perfect creature that could be suitable for the Kryptonian environment and decided to perform experiments on a baby. Due to the cruel nature of the experiments, the baby evolved into a killing monster, with a hatred of all life. (Comic : Superman/Doomsday: Hunter/Prey)

General Zod claims to have been responsible for hunting down Bertron and his project, for the creation of Doomsday. However, it is known that Doomsday killed Bertron himself. (Comic : Last Son of Krypton)

Intermediate Years

Doomsday is killed by The Radiant.
Doomsday, dressed up and chained by the inhabitants of Catalan.

Doomsday was able to escape from Krypton on a random supply ship, which came regularly to bring supplies to Bertron and his team. From there, he began to rampage across the universe. (Comic Miniseries : Superman/Doomsday: Hunter/Prey)

During this period, he had an epic struggle against the Green Lantern Corps, devastating their number by stealing and using one of their rings. Luckily, the Guardians of the Universe were able to stop him, but just barely. (Comic : Doomsday: Year One)

Doomsday also had his first meeting with Darkseid during this era, on a random planet. The two faced off, but did not fight. (Comic : Doomsday: Year One)

The final planet Doomsday invaded during this era was a highly advanced planet known as Catalan. All of their advanced technology was unable to stop him, until they created a superbeing made of pure energy, who they called The Radiant. This being was able to kill the seemingly unstoppable monster, and they wrapped him up in funerary clothes and tied him up as best they could, launching him into space. (Comic Miniseries : Superman/Doomsday: Hunter/Prey)

Drifting through endless space, the coffin came to land on Earth, where it remained buried for years, dormant. (Comic Miniseries : The Death of Superman)

The Battle with Superman

Doomsday and Superman deal a fatal blow to each other.

After a long period of dormancy, Doomsday awakened within his holding cell below the Earth and burrowed his way to the surface. He then started rampaging across the countryside, slowly making his way towards Metropolis.

He battled the Justice League, easily defeating them and serverely injuring some of them. Soon, Superman had to get involved, to protect innocent bystanders.

The battle escalated, and soon it was only Superman and Maxima who fought against Doomsday. Maxima, however, accidentally blew herself up during the battle by igniting a large amount of gasoline all around her.

Superman then had to fight the monster himself. The battle finally worked its way into Metropolis, where finally, the two beat each other to death. There was one final, cataclysmic blow which killed both combatants.

Doomsday's body was then brought to a laboratory for study. (The Death of Superman)

Cheated Death

With all of Supermans energy including his last breath,Superman and Doomsday both hit each other with one powerful blow in the gut, both Superman and Doomsday were dead, or so people thought...

In fact, Doomsday was dead, but one of Doomsday's powers is that after being killed, he regenerates and comes back to life, resistant to whatever killed him after a period of dormancy. He was dormant in the laboratory where his regenerating corpse was being studied.

Cyborg Superman made a show of visiting him there, and angrily grabbing him, tying him to an asteroid, and throwing him into space. Unknown to the others, the Cyborg had planted a chip on Doomsday's back, which contained a backup version of his personality. (Reign of the Supermen)

Later, Doomsday awoke as his asteroid was being taken in by a cargo ship, which was headed to Apokolips. Doomsday killed the entire crew of the ship, and, when it landed, he began to rage across that planet's surface. Nothing there could seem to repel him, so Darkseid was forced to face him in person. This was Darkseid's second meeting with the creature. Doomsday defeated him in battle, taking advantage of Darkseid's arrogance.

The creature was then teleported off Apokolips, with Superman in persuit, through a Boom Tube. He landed on Catalan , where The Radiant once again challenged him, this time with Superman's help; however Doomsday had adapted to the Radiant's power, and was able to kill him.

Doomsday came very near to destroying major reactors that would deal serious damage to Catalan, but luckily, Superman and Waverider were able to banish him to the end of time. (Superman/Doomsday: Hunter/Prey)

Doomsday Wars

However, Doomsday's story did not end there. Brainiac was able to retrieve him from the end of time, and temporarily inhabited his body.

He brought the body with him back to present-day Earth, where he created a new Engine City. There, he realized that Doomsday's will wouldn't allow him to be controlled for much longer. He began preparing Lana Lang's infant son as a new body for himself.

However, Superman was able to defeat him and foil the plan, separating Brainiac from Doomsday. The Justice League was able to trick Doomsday into a teleporter leading to the moon, and that teleporter was set to continuous cycle, leaving Doomsday in transporter limbo. The transporter was left in the hands of the United States Government.(Superman: The Doomsday Wars)

Imperiex War

During the Imperiex War, the United States Government, under President Lex Luthor, made the decision to release Doomsday as a weapon against Imperiex and his probes. Doomsday, reprogrammed to see Imperiex as his creator, Bertron, ravaged numerous Imperiex Probes, alongside Superman. However, when the two were confronted by Imperiex himself, Doomsday was hit with an ultra-powerful energy beam which vaporized his flesh, leaving only bones in space. (Superman: Our Worlds at War)

Biography (Smallville)

Doomsday's history in Smallville is significantly different than that in the comics, and as such we'll present this alternate biography.

Davis Bloome, the human form of Doomsday.

Origins

Doomsday was created by General Zod and Faora out of genetic material.

Davis Bloome

He landed on Earth at the same time that Kal-El did, initially appearing as a mass of goop which formed into a human child.

He lived a human life under the name of Davis Bloome. He was bounced from orphanage to orphanage. He noticed that he was suffering from a series of strange blackouts.

Adult Life

Doomsday, as he appears in Smallville.

He got a job as a paramedic in Metropolis. There, he met Clark Kent, Jimmy Olsen, and Chloe Sullivan. He quickly fell for Chloe, and was jealous of Jimmy. However, his blackouts increased in frequency.

Also, there had been a killer on the loose in Metropolis, who was causing damage. Davis found himself waking up, naked and covered in blood, at these crimes. He began to suspect that he was the killer.

Doomsday Emerges

Doomsday appeared at Chloe Sullivan's wedding with Jimmy Olsen. At the event, he kidnapped Chloe and brought her to the Fortress of Solitude, where her personality as Brainiac asserted herself.

Obsession with Chloe

As Davis' blackouts became worse and worse, he found that being around Chloe Sullivan was the only thing that would keep his darker side in check. After her marriage to Jimmy Olsen ended, the two became close. Finally, in an attempt to save Clark from being forced to banish Davis to the Phantom Zone, Chloe ran away with Davis.

Battle with the Red-Blue Blur

Clark and Chloe finally decided to separate Davis Bloome from his Doomsday persona using Black Kryptonite, which has the ability to split a Kryptonian into two. This effect worked, leaving Clark to battle and defeat the monster in Metropolis. Meanwhile, the human side of Davis killed Jimmy Olsen, having seen him kissing Chloe. Davis himself was then killed.

Other Doomsdays

On occasion, there have been others to assume the identity and biology of Doomsday, as well as copies of Doomsday.

Jimmy Olsen

In All Star Superman #7, Jimmy Olsen injected himself with the Doomsday serum, transforming himself temporarily into Doomsday.

Doomsday Clones

In the Superman/Batman story arc, "The Supergirl from Krypton" Darkseid had created an army of Doomsday clones, which he unleashed on the Amazons as a distraction, so that he could capture Supergirl.
